Human Resources Department Mission

The mission of the Human Resources Department (HR) is to support the organization’s mission/vision of providing high quality care and being a place where physician’s want to practice, patients want to receive care, and employees want to work by providing leadership, guidance and support to current and potential employees in a compassionate, competent, and professional manner.

Description of Major Functions and Operations

The Human Resources Department provides services to all departments within Springfield Medical Care Systems in the areas of: recruitment and selection, performance management, benefits administration, classification and compensation administration, employee relations, organizational development, contract negotiations assistance and interpretation, legal compliance, workers compensation administration, and unemployment compensation.

Department Hours of Operation

The HR Department will be officially open from 7:30 am until 4:45 pm Monday through Friday. There may be some instances where the office will open earlier and/or remain open later during the day.

Chief of HR

Key Responsibilities

  • Resource for managers and staff with regard to: employee relations, disciplinary actions, terminations and performance-related concerns
  • Stays abreast of current and changing employment laws
  • Gathers and reports data for turnover
  • Oversees workers compensation
  • Researches and makes recommendations for any benefit changes
  • Updates and revises HR policies as needed
  • Communicates with and educates managers and staff on HR-related issues
  • Works to improve organizational effectiveness (Organizational Development)
  • Makes recommendations for employee satisfaction
  • Assists employees with 401k, 457b, and frozen pension plan
  • Assists with communications for organizational changes
  • Creates educational opportunities for management and staff for professional growth, with a focus on aligning the organization with our rapidly changing and complex environment through learning, knowledge management, and transformation of organizational norms and values
  • Makes recommendations for position control, compensation management, Fit and Fun Committee activities, Action Team initiatives, employee engagement surveys, and other projects related to employee wellness, satisfaction, recruitment, and retention
  • Creates, oversees, and manages the budget for the HR department and benefits
  • Oversees housekeeping, dietary, and child care center departments

Nicole Cormier

Human Resources Specialist

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides onsite workers compensation case management
  • Provides assistance to the employees of SMCS for the maintenance of all workers’ compensation files and computer databases in regards to injuries
  • Interfaces with SMCS and committees regarding employee safety issues
  • Manages all aspects of FMLA, short and long-term disability
  • Fills in for Chief of Human Resources in her absence

Benefits Specialist

Caitlin Castellini 802-885-7642 ccastellini@springfieldmed.org Hours: 7:30am – 4:00pm

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs day to day responsibilities related to benefit plans
  • Makes changes to employee benefits (medical, dental, vision, long- and short-term disability, life insurance, flexible spending and HSA accounts) as needed
  • Resource for employees with questions regarding benefits coverage
  • Coordinates schedule for Vincent Guy (VALIC Representative)
  • Maintains online benefits filing system and employee benefits records
  • Ensures terminated employees are notified of COBRA rights in accordance with current regulations
  • Oversees reimbursement for employee wellness benefits

Human Resources Assistant

Alysia Redfield 802-885-7041 aredfield@springfieldmed.org Hours: 8:00am – 4:30pm

Key Responsibilities

  • Completes onboarding of new hires, including completion of I-9 form and background checks, completing reference checks, and sending out offer letters
  • Reports new hires to the state
  • Processes employee transfers within the organization
  • Maintains and organizes HRIS and employee files
  • Verifies all required employee licensure
  • Processes all employee status changes, including but not limited to: changes in hours, departments, pay rates, annual evaluation dates, name and address changes, and notifies Payroll and other appropriate personnel
  • Assists with collecting and analyzing HR metrics data
  • Sets up exit interviews with Chief of HR for employees leaving the organization
  • Helps to maintain and ensure the accuracy of Checkmate and CAS system
